Different Students
Require Different
Approaches to Learning
    • Effective teaching strategies help to activate students' curiosity about a class topic, engage students in learning, develop critical thinking skills, keep students on task, engender sustained and useful classroom interaction, and, in general, enable and enhance the learning of course content.

    • One model of learning style divides learners into three modalities: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic.

    • Commonly used teaching methods may include lecture, class participation, demonstration, project-based learning, or memorization, but some combination of these usually results in the most effective strategy; that is, a strategy that engages a diversity of learning styles through varied instruction.

Best Four-Year Colleges in North Carolina

Higher education in North Carolina, according to a recent study, has a $63.5 billion impact on the state’s economy, the monetary equivalent of creating just over one million jobs. While higher education cost taxpayers an estimated $4.3 billion in 2012-13, the return to the economy was a whopping $17 billion.

Given this return, it’s unsurprising North Carolina has shown such strong support for its public universities. The state’s four-year schools have especially distinguished themselves, with institutions in the North Carolina Higher Education (NCHE) system responsible for $1.5 billion in added state income via start-ups begun by NCHE students and alumni. North Carolina’s breakout success with its 4-year universities is a sure sign of good things to come.

Competition for
Top Colleges
Fiercer Than Ever

Academic competition has its good and bad points. Universities are tempted to “follow the leader” and to emulate the most prestigious universities. This is often counterproductive, since higher education institutions have different missions and everyone cannot–and should not–be Harvard. In the United States especially, many universities have spent a lot of money building facilities not necessarily because they are needed but to match those offered by peer institutions.

Competition works to the advantage of those who are already in the big leagues and creates problems for others. At the same time, it keeps institutions on their toes, forces them to think about new ideas, pay attention to quality teaching, measure what they do and benchmark themselves against their peers.
